PTFE with a Controlled Bleed - MCAM's Semitron® ESd 500HR
PTFE, (AKA Teflon) is known for its phenomenal properties and this is a commonly used product in many industries such as flood processing, chemical processing, aerospace and semiconductor manufacturing. PTFE is known for the following outstanding characteristics:
- Chemical Resistance - almost insert
- Thermal Resistance - melting point of ~ 635°F, thermally stable from ~ 328°F to 500°F
- Extremely Insulative - 1018OMEGA/sq
- Low Coefficient of Friction
However, PTFE has an Achilles Heel, PTFE has a tendency to deform under load not to mention it is a very strong insulator. In some cases the application requires strong insulation, however in some cases the application needs to provide a path for bleed-off of electrical energy or even resist the build up of static electricity. Ironically, the additive used to adjust the surface resistivity or the PTFE also enhances the polymers mechanical strength.
Virgin PTFE | Semitron Esd 500HR | |
---|---|---|
Tensile Modulus(ASTM D638) | 80,000 | 250,000 |
Flexural Strength(ASTM D&90) | 72,000 | 350,000 |
MCAM's Semitron® ESd 500HR was developed to offer designers & engineers an antistatic surface resistivity of 1010 - 1012OMEGA/sq. while maintaining the superb properties common with PTFE such as chemical and thermal resistance. The good news is that the mechanical properties of Semitron® ESd 500HR are much better than that of virgin PTFE.
MCAM's Semitron® ESd 500HR mends that Achilles Heel!
