Super Polymer! MCAM's Semitron MDS-100

Semicon Scott Port Plastics

The most critical physical properties in test socket material optimization and selection relate either to the micro machinability or to the socket stability after machining. These most critical physical properties are:

  • Tensile Elongation – for precision hole placement
  • CTE – for dimensional stability over a wide temperature test range
  • Flexural Modulus – for resistance to flex under load after machining an array pattern
  • Thermal Properties – for resistance to burring when machining small features
  • No Fiber Fill – glass fiber is often used to increase flexural strength, however decreases greatly the ability to machine fine features

For the material scientist this presents a unique challenge. The technology used to make a material more precision in terms of micro machining often decreases the materials dimensional stability after machining. MCAM has developed “Super Polymer” in its Semitron® MDS-100 material.

MDS-100 uses proprietary methods of manufacturing to produce a non fiber filled engineered plate that has over 1.4 million psi Flexural Modulus yet with a CTE of only 1.1 x 10^-5 and a 3% Tensile Elongation at Yield! If that’s not enough, the material is available in 1mm increments from 1-6mm thickness and in 9mm and 12mm thus allowing the designer to minimize waste.

For pure value in terms of Back End Test Sockets, Semitron® MDS-100 maybe the best material on the planet!
