Understanding Food Compliancy

In the Food and Beverage Industry, plastics are essential for production equipment and consumer packaging. Understanding food contact regulations can be complex, time-consuming, and often misunderstood. Food contact material (FCM) compliance is essential for consumer safety. Any materials used for transporting, packaging, or manufacturing must meet local Food compliance regulations.

COMMON FCM REGULATIONS

  • FDA The Food and Drug Administration is responsible for determining how materials may be used in contact with food products. Section 21 CFR 177 is specific to Polymers.
  • EU 10/2011 This European Union regulation sets rules for plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food.
  • NSF/ANSI 51 establishes minimum public health and sanitation requirements for materials and finishes used in the manufacturing of commercial food service equipment and its components such as tubing, sealants, gaskets, and valves.
  • USDA United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Safety and Inspection Service regulates the manufacturing, packaging, and handling practices in the agricultural food industry. It aims to meet the needs of commercial farming and livestock food production.
  • 3-A (Dairy and Milk) Standard Number 20-17, 3-A Sanitary Standards for Multiple-Use Plastic Materials Used as Product Contact Surfaces for Dairy Equipment covers material requirements of plastics intended for multiple uses as product contact in equipment for production, processing, and handling of milk and milk products.
  • Canada AG The safety of all materials used for food packaging is controlled under division 23 of the Food and Drugs Act and Regulations, Section B.23.001.
