Norsok M710 is a globally recognized standard developed by the Norwegian Petroleum Industry used to qualify nonmetallic materials for the petroleum industry.
Specifically, elastomers and polymers for permanent use subsea, including well completion, X-mas tree, control systems and valves. It provides standards for rapid gas decompression (RGD) also known as explosive decompression (ED) testing and sour gas (H2 S) aging on elastomers and thermoplastics.
These tests give insight to the performance and life expectancy of a seal in various chemical processing applications.
Sour gas (Hydrogen Sulfide or H2S) can have detrimental effects on polymers. Inadequate polymers will become hardened and brittle and thus display reduced performance in terms of sealing resulting in higher costs, lower MTBR, or even environmental and safety concerns.
There are two relevant sections to the standard:
- Annex A– The test procedures, conditions and specimens required to test for aging of the polymer (Sour Gas)
- Annex B– Resistance to Rapid Gas Decompression (RGD)aka: explosive decompression
